This African mask is from the Marka (Maraka/Warka/Waraka) people of Mali. The Marka are neighbors to the Bamana (Bambara) people and so their artistic styles share striking similarities. Marka tribal masks like those from the Bamana have a small mouth with raised lips at the bottom of a elongated face. The nose is long and thin with eyes cast backwords. The main distiction between Marka and Bamana tribal masks is the Marka's extensive use of bronze, copper or tin sheeting affixed on the face with small tacks or brads. Some Marka masks like this one have small colorful cotton tassels. Antelopes are revered throughout Mali as a symbol of speed and endurance all hunters seek to attain and are therefore featured in most masks. This mask has a human face topped by antelope's horns. The Marka used these masks in ceremonies to ensure a successful hunt or a bountiful harvest and also in circumcision ceremonies which is an initiatory ritual into manhood.
