Meet Steve Kyalo, a gifted artist based in Nairobi, Kenya, and a dear friend we have known for many years. Steve has always used his creativity not just to make beautiful handmade pieces, but to serve others. For years, he ran a small children’s home, taking in children from the streets and from difficult family situations—providing them with food, a safe place to sleep, and access to education.
Unfortunately, due to rising costs and strict updated building codes in Kenya, Steve was no longer able to afford the construction requirements needed to continue operating the children’s home, and he was forced to close it. Even so, his commitment to his family and community never stopped.
Today, Steve is focused on supporting his own children—especially his oldest son, who is working toward attending university abroad.
In Kenya, when a family faces a significant financial challenge like school fees, the community often comes together in what is called a harambee. Harambee means “all pull together”—a collective effort where friends, family, and community members contribute what they can to help lift one another.
We are honored to take part in Steve’s harambee by offering a special collection of his handmade work in our shop. Every purchase from this collection goes directly to Steve to support his son’s university education.
Access to higher education has the power to change not just one life, but an entire family’s future—opening doors to opportunity, stability, and the ability to give back in return.
When you choose a piece from this collection, you’re not just supporting handmade art—you’re helping invest in education, dignity, and hope.
Thank you for joining in the spirit of harambee.
