Worn at funerals, the Kpelie tribal masks serve to compel the spirit of the deceased to leave his house. These African masks are kept by the Poro society, an organization that is based on age-grades that exerts political and social control, conveys traditional knowledge, and fulfills religious functions, especially during the elaborate funeral ceremonies.
