

This beautiful African mask is from the Punu people of Gabon. Most Punu tribal masks feature distinctively beautiful white faces because in their folklore the color white is associated with anti-witchcraft powers. This mask has realistic facial features with a protruding pursed lips, protruding eyes, high-domed forehead, and hair that resembles Punu women hair style. On the forehead there is a diamond-shaped scarification marks. Punu masks like this one were worn during funerals.
